A scimitar.
Reply:Well there are several forms of the scimitar that would match that... but the arabic specific one would be the Saif. (Though the persian Shamsir also fits the description)
Though these are often closer to sabers than being thick swords.
The european falchions and cutlasses also might fit your description as they were thicker than the scimitar's. Or even the Chinese Dao.
